The Master’s programme in European Economic Studies within the Framework of Globalisation offers the opportunity to excel in two areas: the professional sphere and the academic sphere.

Through compulsory modules and work placements, you will be guided towards the path you choose.

Classes are face-to-face, taking place Monday to Thursday from 16:30 to 20:30. In addition, complementary activities are scheduled on certain Fridays throughout the academic year (as indicated in the calendar), though these may change with advance notice.

You can view the schedule on the master’s programme page of the UMA’s official website.

To be awarded the degree, students must successfully complete 43 compulsory credits, 6.5 credits of external practice and 10.5 credits for the Master’s Thesis totalling the 60 credits required for the Official Master’s in European Economic Studies within the Framework of Globalisation at the University of Málaga.

First Semester

Compulsory (4 ECTs) | 28 hours

This module offers a systematic overview of the theoretical and practical foundations underpinning economic integration processes in any regional context, with particular emphasis on Europe.

Compulsory (4 ECTs) | 28 hours

This module studies the historical evolution of European integration, from the pioneering proposals of the nineteenth century up to the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union in 2020.

Compulsory (4 ECTs) | 28 hours

This module offers a comprehensive overview of the institutional, legal, and political system of the European Union, as well as its role as a global actor.

Compulsory (4 ECTs) | 28 hours

This module provides a comprehensive overview of the European Single Market and the principal economic policies that underpin it. It examines how the free-movement area is constructed and regulated; the Common Agricultural Policy in both its current and future dimensions; the territorial and social cohesion mechanisms designed to correct imbalances; and the role of other internal policies (innovation, energy, transport, the environment and the social dimension) within both the EU and international contexts.

Compulsory (4 ECTs) | 28 hours

This module analyses the EU’s macroeconomic and financial framework, from its key indicators and stages of development to the budgetary and fiscal instruments that support the Union. It examines the economic role of the principal institutions (the Commission, the Council, the Parliament and the ECB), the formulation of economic policy and the multiannual financial framework. It also covers the major areas of Community expenditure, the budget’s revenue sources, and the challenges to the sustainability of public finances and financial stability within the euro area.

Compulsory (4 ECTs) | 28 hours

This module explores the coordination of economic policies within the EU, beginning with the Multilateral Surveillance Procedure and the Stability and Growth Pact, as well as the historical evolution of cooperation and the transition towards the Economic and Monetary Union, culminating in the adoption of the euro. It then examines the structure of the Banking Union and the Capital Markets Union, the role of the ECB, the ESCB and the Eurosystem in shaping monetary policy, and the governance of the euro area’s financial system within a global context.

Compulsory (6 ECTs) | 162.5 hours

Students will undertake these work placement at one of the centres with which we have agreements.

Second Semester

Compulsory (7 ECTs) | 49 hours

This module explores how the European Union responds and adapts to the challenges of globalisation across multiple domains: its trade policy and sustainability strategy, the articulation of security and defence, the management of migration flows, fiscal coordination in the face of tax havens and evasion, development cooperation and humanitarian aid, and energy and environmental policies within the framework of global climate governance. The course demonstrates how the EU’s external action is embedded in an interdependent world and how its norms and mechanisms help shape global processes.

Compulsory (2 ECTs) | 14 hours

Analyses the network of agreements with the main sub-regional blocs of Latin America and the Caribbean (Central America, Andean Community, Mercosur and the Caribbean) and the dynamics of international trade both in multilateral forums (WTO) and through bilateral pacts, including the EU–Mercosur Agreement.

Compulsory (2 ECTs) | 14 hours

Explores regional strategies (Sahel, Horn of Africa, Gulf of Guinea), formal mechanisms (Africa–EU summits, Joint Africa–EU Strategy) and the key trade pillars (Yaoundé, Lomé, Cotonou, Samoa Agreements, GSP, bilateral pacts) that structure the economic link.

Compulsory (2 ECTs) | 14 hours

Provides an analysis of the historical, economic and political frameworks defining the EU’s ties with these three major powers. It examines economic dimensions, close security and defence links (NATO and CFSP/CSDP missions), and judicial and home-affairs cooperation.

Compulsory (2 ECTs) | 14 hours

Examines the EU’s relations with Asia’s great powers (China, Japan and South Korea), as well as the growing link with Southeast Asian countries under the ASEAN Partnership. Starting from a socio-cultural and socio-economic framework to contextualise each sub-region’s dynamics, it analyses trade, diplomatic and strategic dimensions—from European participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative to free-trade and association agreements with Korea, Japan and ASEAN members.

Compulsory (2 ECTs) | 14 hours

Offers a straightforward yet practical introduction to social-science research methods and techniques, especially in economics and sociology. Covers main approaches, stages and decisions in a research project—formulating questions and hypotheses, selecting sources, data types and methodological strategies, ethical principles and interpreting results. The aim is not only to learn tools but to foster a constructive, proactive attitude toward complex social problems and the need for transdisciplinary approaches. Throughout the course, concrete examples are discussed and key institutions for social-science studies—such as the Spanish Centre for Sociological Research (CIS), Eurostat, the National Statistics Institute (INE), the Eurobarometer and the World Values Survey—are presented.

Compulsory (2 ECTs) | 14 hours

Provides a hands-on, applied introduction to fundamental statistical and econometric methods for analysing economic phenomena. Combines descriptive statistics (measures of central tendency and dispersion, graphical representation) and inferential statistics (distributions, hypothesis testing) with econometric modelling techniques: simple and multiple linear regression (assumptions, estimation, diagnostics and extensions such as non-linearity or dummy variables) and panel data analysis using fixed and random effects. All content is taught with a strong practical component, supported by software tools, so that students learn both theoretical concepts and their application to real-world cases.

Compulsory (10.5 ECTs) | 262.5 hours

A theoretical-practical research project on any topic covered during the Master’s in European Economic Studies within the Framework of Globalisation.
